QR codes have become almost impossible to avoid. They sit on restaurant tables, event tickets, product labels, business cards, and the occasional Wi-Fi router. Creating one takes seconds, but that does not mean every QR code is safe to use.
The important thing to understand is that a QR code is not a security mechanism. It is simply a visual way of storing information. Anyone who scans it can potentially read that information, whether it happens to be a website address, a Wi-Fi password, or a private message.
So, before turning something into a black-and-white square, think about what you are actually putting inside it.
Creating a Secure QR Code for a URL
Website links are probably the easiest information to convert into a QR code. Enter the complete address into a reputable generator, create the image, and scan it before publishing.
Use an HTTPS address whenever the website supports it. For example, https://example.com is preferable to an unsecured HTTP connection because HTTPS encrypts communication between the visitor and the website.

If you need to share a long document, putting the entire thing into the QR code usually isn’t the best approach. Publish the information on a webpage or document instead, then use the QR code to point people there.

The difference between static and dynamic QR codes is worth understanding before choosing a generator.

This is especially important with Wi-Fi credentials. You should know whether the service stores the information you provide, sends it to its servers, or keeps it for analytics.
For a public website URL, this may not be a major concern. For private credentials, it can be.
When privacy matters, look for a generator that clearly explains how your data is handled, or use software that creates the QR code locally.
Test the Code Before Anyone Else Does
Never assume that a generated QR code is correct just because the image looks right.
Scan it with your phone and verify the result. If possible, test it on another device as well. For Wi-Fi codes, confirm that the correct network appears and that the connection process works as expected.
Printing introduces another potential problem. A code that scans perfectly from a large monitor might struggle when reduced to a tiny sticker.
